Inside Sport magazine has been recognised for excellence at the 2009 Australian Sports Commission Media Awards, taking out the grand prize for the Best Contribution To The Coverage of Sport by an Organisation.
Other finalists in the category were the Seven Network for its AFL coverage throughout the year, SBS for its football, and the Daily Telegraph for its sports coverage in 2009.
Inside Sport writer Travis Cranley was also a winner for the Best Journalism on Community Sport for his article “The Kiddie Wars”, which appeared in the August 2009 edition.
Inside Sport writer Daniel Williams was Highly Commended for the Best Profile of an Athlete, Team or Coach (print media) for his outstanding piece on Phil “Gus” Gould, which appeared in the September 2009 edition of Inside Sport.
The winners were announced at a gala dinner at Melbourne’s Crown Casino last Thursday night. Judges were netball legend Liz Ellis, Chair of the Australian Sports Commission Board; Mike Gibson, host of the Back Page on Fox Sports and former ASC Media Awards Lifetime Achievement winner; Harry Gordon, official Australian Olympic Committee historian and former ASC Media Awards Lifetime Achievement winner; Tim Lane, AFL commentator and columnist for The Age; and Bevan Hannan,
Strategic Communications Advisor for the Australian Sports Commission.
This is the third consecutive year that Inside Sport has been a finalist in this category, but the first time the magazine has been awarded the prestigious title.
