The evolution of Waves Magazine to a new format with an edgy image and voice has been well received by readers and advertisers alike. Waves will continue to evolve its offer and focus on Australian surfing characters and stories.
Editor of Waves, Roghan McKerlie, who has driven the new-look Waves is taking a well-earned break in the form of a six-month overseas sabbatical. Roghan will continue to write and contribute while he is away (from some of the world’s great surf destinations!) and will return to nextmedia in a new role mid-2010.
This is an opportunity to reward those in the Waves team and promote from within. Ryan “Nugget” Glen has been appointed Editor of Waves. Ryan, who is Gold Coast bred, has been Deputy Editor of Waves for three years and prior to that, worked on Australia’s Surfing Life. Ryan has played a key role in expanding Waves’ presence as a presenter on the Waves Black Knight competition shown on FUEL TV, launching the new Waves website and driving the Waves evolution earlier this year.
Ethan Smith has been promoted to the role of Deputy Editor. Ethan, who has been with Waves since 2003, represents the soul of Waves magazine and has a personal collection of over 12 years of original Waves editions.
We also announce two new appointments to Waves. With Queensland being such an integral part of the Australian surfing community, we are pleased to announce Beren Hall as Waves’ Qld Correspondent. Beren has strong credibility in the surfing media, film and DVDs, and is an important addition to the team to represent us on the Gold Coast. Sam Patterson, a current competitor on the Australian Junior series, will also commence as Editorial Assistant with the Waves team.
